Colombo, April 5 – In a significant humanitarian gesture, Sri Lanka is deploying three specialized military teams to Myanmar to aid in rescue, relief, and medical operations following the devastating earthquake on March 28. The move comes alongside a state donation of USD 1 million, the Ministry of Defence confirmed on Friday.

Relief Aircraft Set to Depart Saturday

According to the ministry, a special aircraft carrying emergency relief supplies will depart Sri Lanka for Myanmar on Saturday. The three military units, trained in disaster response and medical care, will be stationed in the quake-hit areas to support ongoing rescue operations and provide urgent medical assistance.

Religious Solidarity Spurs Additional Aid

Reinforcing the deep-rooted religious ties between the two countries, leaders of Sri Lanka’s three main Buddhist sects have also mobilized relief initiatives. The Temple of the Tooth, one of the most sacred sites for Buddhists globally, announced it is raising LKR 15 million (approximately USD 50,000) to assist Myanmar in the wake of the tragedy.

Shared Buddhist Heritage

Sri Lanka and Myanmar share a historical bond through their common practice of Theravada Buddhism, the oldest surviving school of Buddhism. This shared spiritual heritage has sparked a strong wave of empathy and support across Sri Lanka’s Buddhist community in response to Myanmar’s crisis.

Myanmar Earthquake Toll Rises

The earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28 has claimed the lives of over 3,100 people, with nearly 5,000 injured and more than 370 still missing, as per the latest official figures. Relief efforts are ongoing, with international assistance playing a vital role in managing the disaster's aftermath.

Sri Lanka’s prompt military and civilian response underlines both the strategic and spiritual connection it maintains with Myanmar, showcasing a united front in times of crisis.
