The Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, has approved the appointment of five advocates as judges of the Calcutta High Court. The decision was taken during a collegium meeting held on February 25, 2025.
The advocates recommended for elevation to the bench are Smita Das De, Reetobroto Kumar Mitra, Md Talay Masood Siddiqui, Krishnaraj Thaker, and Om Narayan Rai.
This significant development comes at a crucial time for the Calcutta High Court, which is currently functioning with just 43 judges, well below its sanctioned strength of 72 judges. The appointment of these advocates is expected to ease the court's workload and expedite the judicial process, addressing pending cases and improving overall efficiency.
The collegium's recommendation will now be forwarded for necessary clearances, following which official appointments will be made.
