Survey Reveals 65% of Indians Identify Almonds as a High-Protein Snack, Stronger Awareness in Tier-II Cities

New Delhi, Feb 28: A recent survey has found that 65% of Indians recognize almonds as a high-protein snack, with greater awareness observed in tier-II cities such as Lucknow and Thiruvananthapuram. The study, conducted across 17 cities with responses from 4,300 participants, indicates a growing acceptance of almonds as a protein-rich snack beyond major metropolitan areas.

According to the findings of the YouGov survey in association with the Almond Board of California, tier-II cities such as Coimbatore (34%), Guwahati (34%), and Indore (31%) demonstrated a higher acknowledgment of almonds as a protein source compared to metro cities.

Regional and Age-Based Consumption Trends

The survey further highlighted distinct regional and demographic consumption patterns:
  • North India: 25% of respondents associate almonds with muscle recovery.
  • West India: 33% believe almonds help control hunger.
  • Gen-Z: Prioritize almonds for skin health benefits.
  • Millennials & Gen-X: 56% cite protein richness as their main reason for consumption.

Daily Consumption and Snacking Habits

On average, Indians consume 6-8 almonds daily, with:
  • 43% preferring to eat them first thing in the morning
  • 24% incorporating them into breakfast
Almonds are also emerging as a popular daytime snack, with 55% of respondents considering them an ideal snack option. Recognition levels are particularly high in Ludhiana (69%) and Bangalore (63%), followed by Delhi-NCR and Ahmedabad (58% each).

Growing Popularity of Almonds in Indian Diets

The findings underscore a significant shift in dietary preferences, with almonds gaining widespread acceptance for their nutritional benefits. The increasing recognition in tier-II cities suggests a broader health-conscious movement beyond metro hubs, making almonds a staple in Indian households.
