Kolkata, April 6 – West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari marked the occasion of Ram Navami on Sunday by laying the foundation stone for a Ram Temple in Sonachura village, Nandigram, located in the Purba Medinipur district.
The senior BJP leader, who is also the MLA from Nandigram, led a Ram Navami rally from Shahid Minar to the proposed temple site. Dressed in saffron and surrounded by chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram,’ Adhikari performed the ceremony amid a large gathering of supporters and devotees.
The temple site at Sonachura holds deep historical significance. It was the epicenter of the 2007 anti-land acquisition movement during the Left Front regime, where at least seven protestors lost their lives in firing. The movement, led by the Trinamool Congress at the time, played a pivotal role in shaping West Bengal’s political landscape.
This development comes ahead of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s scheduled inauguration of a Jagannath Temple later this month in Digha, another location in the same district.
The twin temple initiatives underscore a growing emphasis on religious and cultural symbolism in the state’s political narrative.
