New Delhi, Feb 26: On the occasion of Mahashivratri, Swiggy Instamart temporarily removed non-vegetarian items, including eggs, meat, and fish, from its delivery menu in select cities such as Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad. The move, aimed at respecting religious sentiments, was reflected on the platform’s app, though deliveries resumed in some cities by the evening.
According to sources, the decision was taken as Swiggy Instamart facilitated the delivery of Tandool Mahaprasad Ladoos, sacred offerings from the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple to devotees. The quick commerce platform provided these ladoos across 40 cities, including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Goa, and Madhya Pradesh locations.
However, some users took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their concerns over removing non-vegetarian items, sharing screenshots to highlight the changes in the grocery section of Swiggy Instamart.
Amitesh Jha, CEO of Swiggy Instamart, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, "Mahashivratri is a time of deep devotion, and we are honored to bring this spiritual experience to our users' homes. The Tandool Mahaprasad holds profound significance for devotees, and we are making it easier than ever for them to receive these sacred offerings without compromising authenticity."
While the temporary restriction on non-veg items led to mixed reactions online, Swiggy Instamart maintained that the move aligned with the festival's religious importance.
