Telangana Assembly to debate caste survey on Feb 4

Hyderabad, Feb 3 (PTI) – The Telangana Assembly is set to convene on Tuesday to discuss the findings of the state’s caste survey, a significant step in shaping future welfare policies. Ahead of the discussion, the state cabinet will hold a meeting on Tuesday morning to review the report before presenting it to the Assembly, official sources confirmed.

The survey, conducted by the state planning department, was submitted to the cabinet sub-committee led by Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday. According to the report, Backward Classes (BCs), excluding Muslim minorities, form the largest segment of Telangana’s 3.70 crore population, accounting for 46.25 percent.

The breakdown of the state's demographic composition is as follows:

  • Backward Classes (excluding Muslim minorities): 46.25% (1,64,09,179 individuals)
  • Scheduled Castes (SCs): 17.43% (61,84,319 individuals)
  • Scheduled Tribes (STs): 10.45% (37,05,929 individuals)
  • Backward Classes among Muslims: 10.08% (35,76,588 individuals)
  • Other Castes (OCs): 13.31%
  • OCs among Muslims: 2.48%
  • Total Muslim Population: 12.56% (including all categories)
The survey covered 1,12,15,134 households out of the total 1,15,78,457 in the state. Telangana already provides reservations for backward Muslim communities under the BC category.

Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy emphasized that the survey aims to enable data-driven policies to uplift the poorest and most marginalized sections of society across social, economic, educational, and political spheres.

This comprehensive caste-based survey was a key election promise of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Conducted over 50 days from November 6, 2024, it serves as a foundation for the Congress government’s commitment to inclusive development and equitable opportunities in Telangana.

The Assembly’s discussion on the report is expected to have a major impact on policy formulation and future welfare initiatives in the state.
