Hyderabad, March 7: The Telangana Congress government, led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, announced plans to organize an all-party meeting on the issue of delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. The decision aims to protect the interests of the state and ensure fairness during the delimitation process.
The announcement came from Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, following a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister late Thursday. Highlighting the significance of the issue, Srinivas Reddy alleged that the NDA-led central government intends to disadvantage southern states through constituency delimitation, emphasizing the need for southern states, including Telangana, to receive their fair share of increased parliamentary constituencies proportionately, as anticipated in northern states.
In another crucial development, the Telangana Cabinet approved a draft bill proposing to increase the reservation quota for Backward Classes (BCs) to 42%, up from the existing 23%. Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said this bill would soon be tabled in the State Assembly.
This move fulfills an election promise made by the Congress party, aligning with the recent caste survey conducted by the government—a key pledge made by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the election campaign.
The upcoming all-party meeting on delimitation will be spearheaded by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, along with senior Congress leader and former minister K Jana Reddy. However, the date for this meeting has not yet been finalized.
Telangana’s initiative closely follows a similar move by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, who recently convened an all-party meeting addressing the same issue.
Minister Srinivas Reddy also informed that the Cabinet plans to introduce legislation on Scheduled Caste (SC) categorisation shortly in the State Assembly. This follows the state government’s acceptance of three recommendations from a judicial commission appointed specifically to address SC categorisation. Notably, the Telangana government rejected the commission's recommendation to exclude the "creamy layer" from SC reservations.
Additionally, the Cabinet resolved to host the prestigious Miss World pageant in Telangana from May 7 to May 31, 2025. Srinivas Reddy emphasized that the government aims to showcase Telangana's hospitality on a global stage, with meticulous arrangements planned for delegates and guests arriving from approximately 140 countries.
Lastly, the Cabinet approved the establishment of a governing board for the revered Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Yadadri, Hyderabad, similar in structure to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) board overseeing the Lord Venkateswara temple.
