Hyderabad, March 6:
The Telangana government, led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, announced on Thursday its decision to hold an all-party meeting on the crucial issue of delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. This move aims to ensure that Telangana receives fair representation and is not disadvantaged by the delimitation exercise proposed by the central government.
Speaking to media persons after a Cabinet meeting, Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy accused the NDA government at the Centre of attempting to disadvantage southern states through constituency delimitation. He emphasized that the southern states, including Telangana, deserve an increase in parliamentary constituencies on a proportional basis, similar to northern states.
The upcoming all-party meeting will be spearheaded by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, along with senior Congress leader and former minister K Jana Reddy. Although Srinivas Reddy did not specify the exact date, he confirmed that the meeting would soon be convened.
This decision comes just a day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin conducted a similar meeting, highlighting a collective regional stance on the delimitation issue.
In addition to delimitation concerns, Telangana's Cabinet approved a draft bill aimed at increasing reservation quotas for backward classes (BCs) to 42%. This policy was a key election promise made by the Congress party during its campaign.
According to Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, the bill is set to be tabled in the Assembly shortly. This decision aligns with the recent caste census conducted by the Telangana government, a commitment originally made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to provide greater representation and benefits to backward communities.
Srinivas Reddy also stated that the Cabinet decided to introduce legislation regarding Scheduled Caste (SC) categorisation. The Telangana government previously accepted three significant recommendations from a judicial commission established for SC categorisation, though it rejected the commission's suggestion to exclude the 'creamy layer' from reservation benefits.
Further, Srinivas Reddy highlighted the government's preparations to host the prestigious Miss World pageant from May 7 to May 31 in Telangana. The Cabinet emphasized the importance of ensuring impeccable arrangements for international guests and participants expected from around 140 countries, aiming for a flawless global showcase of the state.
In another important decision, the Cabinet resolved to appoint a governing board for the renowned Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Yadadri, similar to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which oversees the famed Lord Venkateswara temple. This step aims to enhance the management and administration of the prominent spiritual and tourism destination near Hyderabad.
