Nagarkurnool, Telangana (March 3) — Rescue teams working tirelessly to locate eight persons trapped in the collapsed Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel are currently inspecting new locations suggested by scientists, after a radar survey identified only metallic objects at previous points.
The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) scientists from Hyderabad recently conducted a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey within the tunnel to identify potential signs of human presence. However, initial drilling at points marked as "anomalies" by NGRI experts revealed only metallic debris, prompting rescue personnel to explore other locations pinpointed by the survey.
Officials involved in the rescue operations stated, "They are trying at the other locations identified by scientists. The scientists are prepared to conduct additional GPR surveys if necessary." The challenging environment within the tunnel, characterized by slush and water accumulation, has significantly complicated the rescue operation. Despite these difficulties, improving conditions have allowed rescue efforts to intensify.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, after visiting the site and reviewing the situation with officials on Sunday, confirmed that the exact location of the eight trapped individuals—comprising engineers and labourers—remains unknown. He assured that his government is committed to accelerating rescue operations, noting that the restoration of a crucial damaged conveyor belt used for clearing silt is expected by Monday. The repair of this belt is anticipated to significantly speed up rescue activities.
Additionally, Chief Minister Reddy emphasized the government's determination to manage the crisis effectively and pledged comprehensive support to the families impacted by the tragedy.
The eight workers have been trapped beneath the collapsed roof of the tunnel since February 22. With rescue operations now escalating, officials remain hopeful of finding survivors.
