Thane, Feb 26 – A 35-year-old auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested in Thane for allegedly attempting to kill his estranged wife by setting her on fire over a prolonged domestic feud, police officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to an official from Chitalsar police station, the couple had ongoing disputes, and the accused frequently harassed his 30-year-old wife, suspecting her character. The woman had been living separately in Thane, and their divorce case was pending in court. Despite this, the man persistently pressured her to return to him and had even issued threats if she refused.
The horrific incident took place on Tuesday morning when the woman was on her way to work. Near the Borivali tunnel construction site, the accused intercepted her, attacked her with an iron rod, and then doused her with an inflammable liquid before setting her ablaze.
Passersby quickly intervened, managing to douse the flames and rush the severely injured woman to a nearby hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, police arrested the accused and charged him under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigations into the case are ongoing.
