Thane, February 27: Various programs were organized in Thane on Thursday to celebrate Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Din, observed annually on the birth anniversary of renowned poet and playwright V.V. Shirwadkar, popularly known as Kusumagraj.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) marked the occasion by distributing sweets at the entrance of Thane railway station. However, MNS leaders Avinash Jadhav and Ravindra More criticized the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) for allegedly failing to celebrate the event on a grand scale. The party also took issue with the TMC’s recent decision to withdraw additional salary increments for employees who complete higher education courses related to Marathi.

Responding to the criticism, the TMC stated in a press release that it had conducted a special event presided over by civic chief Saurabh Rao. During the program, a commemorative plaque was unveiled to honor the day.

Meanwhile, Thane’s Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske urged the TMC to revoke its decision on salary increments for employees pursuing Marathi-related studies. Emphasizing the importance of the language, Mhaske stated, “Marathi has been recognized as a classical language, and the Maharashtra government has implemented various measures to promote its use.”

The controversy surrounding the TMC’s decision has sparked debate over the municipal body's commitment to preserving and encouraging Marathi language education.
