Thane, April 5 – A 33-year-old man has been arrested in Ulhasnagar, Thane district, for allegedly abetting the suicide of his 25-year-old wife, driven by dowry harassment and pressure over not giving birth to a male child, police confirmed on Saturday.

Husband Booked for Dowry Death and Harassment

The accused, identified as Vishal Gavai, was taken into custody following a complaint that revealed a harrowing tale of sustained abuse. Gavai had a love marriage with Darshana, but their relationship deteriorated over time as he began demanding money from her family, according to the FIR.

The situation reportedly worsened after the couple had two daughters. Gavai allegedly subjected Darshana to continued harassment, which ultimately led her to take the extreme step. On April 1, Darshana was found dead, having allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling of their home in Ulhasnagar.

Case Registered Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita

Police have booked Vishal Gavai under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:

  • Section 108 – Abetment of suicide
  • Section 80 – Dowry death
  • Section 115(2) – Voluntarily causing hurt
  • Section 352 – Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace
The arrest highlights the ongoing societal issue of gender-based discrimination and dowry-related violence, which continues to affect women across various parts of India.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case.
