Thane police arrest ex-corporator of Vasai-Virar civic body, three others for extortion bid

Thane, Feb 2 (PTI) – Maharashtra Police have arrested a former corporator of the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation along with three others for allegedly attempting to extort ₹1.5 crore from a developer, an official confirmed on Sunday.

According to police sources, the ex-corporator had lodged complaints against a builder undertaking a slum redevelopment project in Mumbai’s Worli area. Initially, he demanded ₹10 crore to withdraw the complaints but later settled for ₹1.5 crore after negotiations.

Acting on a tip-off from the builder, police set up a trap near a hotel in Bhayander, on the outskirts of Mumbai, where they nabbed the politician’s aide while he was accepting the first instalment of ₹25 lakh on Saturday night.

Subsequently, police arrested the former corporator and two more individuals from Vasai in Palghar district, confirmed Assistant Inspector Amol Talekar of Navghar police station.

Authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain whether more people were involved in the extortion scheme.
