Thane, March 2, 2025 – A man and his two siblings have been arrested on charges of abetting the suicide of a woman with whom the man had been in a long-term relationship, the police reported on Sunday.
The victim, a 35-year-old unmarried woman from Mharal in Titwala township, had been in a 15-year romantic relationship with the man, who resides in the Ulhasnagar area. Despite promising to marry her, the man failed to follow through, giving various reasons over the years. Their relationship was marred by frequent arguments, mainly due to his broken marriage promises, said Inspector Suresh Kadam of the Kalyan taluka police station.
The victim's relationship with the man faced additional pressure from his family. His brother and sister had reportedly advised the woman to end the relationship, urging him to marry another woman instead.
Five years ago, the man did marry someone else, but continued his relationship with the victim, assuring her that he would eventually marry her. However, this led to ongoing tension between them.
The tragic turn came on February 28, when another heated argument escalated between the two. Following this altercation, the woman was found dead, having allegedly hung herself at her home. Prior to her death, she recorded a video message on her mobile phone, in which she held the man and his siblings responsible for her actions.
Following the release of the video and a formal complaint from the victim's mother, the police arrested the 30-35-year-old man, his brother, and sister on charges under Sections 108 (Abetment of Suicide) and 3(5) (Criminal Act Done by Several Persons in Furtherance of Common Intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
The investigation is ongoing as the authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the woman's tragic death.
