Thane, Feb 28: In a significant move to address the growing traffic congestion in Thane, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced on Friday that an automated pod taxi system will be operated on a trial basis. The pilot project will run between Bhayander Pada Metro Station on Ghodbunder Road and Vihang Hills Circle in Thane.
Given the city's rising vehicle numbers and limited road infrastructure, authorities are exploring alternative transport solutions such as pod taxis and ropeways, Sarnaik stated. Pod taxis, also known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT), are autonomous, driverless electric vehicles designed to ferry passengers between designated points at high speeds.
"The initiative aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who have been advocating for modern urban transport solutions," Sarnaik said. He also highlighted his recent visit to Vadodara, Gujarat, to review a similar pod taxi project.
In addition to the Thane trial, a pod taxi pilot project has already been approved for Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Similar initiatives will also be launched between JP Infrastructure in Mira-Bhayander and the Shivaji Maharaj Statue, as well as the Bhayander Pada Metro Station and Vihang Hills Circle in Thane.
Earlier in the day, Sarnaik conducted a review of multiple infrastructure projects alongside officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation. Authorities hope that pod taxis, if successful, will significantly improve urban mobility and reduce congestion in high-traffic zones.
