Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 27: The Kerala police have officially arrested 23-year-old Afan, the sole accused in the gruesome mass murder that occurred in Venjaramoodu four days ago. The arrest was recorded at the Government Medical College Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment after allegedly consuming poison following the crime.

According to police sources, Afan has been charged with the murder of his 88-year-old grandmother at her residence under the Pangode police station limits. A magistrate visited the hospital and remanded him to judicial custody until March 13. The legal proceedings were initiated following his medical examination.

In a shocking series of events, Afan allegedly killed five family members, including his 13-year-old brother, his paternal uncle and aunt, and a young woman believed to be his lover. His mother also sustained severe injuries in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at a private medical college hospital.

The crime occurred within the jurisdiction of two police stations—Venjaramoodu and Pangode. While the first arrest was recorded for the crime committed under Pangode limits, police have stated that further arrests in connection with the other murders will be documented later.

Following the brutal act, Afan voluntarily surrendered at the Venjaramoodu police station and confessed to the killings. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case.
