Kathmandu, February 26 – The revered Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal witnessed a massive influx of devotees from across the country and neighboring India as thousands gathered to offer prayers on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri.

Since late Tuesday night, devotees formed long queues along the banks of the Bagmati River, eager to have darshan of the sacred Shiva Linga. The temple opened its doors at 2:15 AM, allowing devotees to enter through all four gates to seek blessings.

Special Arrangements for Devotees

Authorities have implemented extensive arrangements to accommodate the massive turnout. Milan Kumar Thapa, member secretary of the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT), stated that security and logistical measures were in place to ensure a smooth flow of visitors. Over 4,000 security personnel and 10,000 volunteers have been deployed to maintain order and facilitate prayers.

To efficiently manage the crowd, officials have organized eight queues inside the temple premises and four outside. Entry points have been designated at Mitrapark, Gaushala, and Pingalasthan, with an additional lane via Tilganga Ram Temple prepared as a backup.

The temple and its surroundings have been adorned with flowers, colorful lights, banners, and paper flags, enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the festival.

Strict Regulations and Free Services for Devotees

In line with religious observances, local authorities have strictly prohibited the sale and consumption of marijuana, hemp, alcohol, meat, and fish during the festival. Violators face legal action.

The Maha Shivaratri Main Celebration Committee, led by Tourism and Culture Minister Badri Prasad Pandey, has coordinated efforts to provide free meals, drinking water, and medical services to devotees. As of 9:30 AM on Wednesday, over 150,000 devotees had already completed their prayers, and officials estimate the total footfall to exceed one million by Thursday morning.

Sadhus and Naga Babas Gather at Pashupatinath

The festival has also attracted around 3,500 Sadhus, including 700 Naga Babas from India, who have taken residence within the temple premises. Rewati Raman Adhikari, a senior PADT official, confirmed that these ascetics would receive free meals, water, accommodation, and medical facilities. Depending on their ranks, some Sadhus will also be given Dakshina, with the highest amount reaching NRs 15,000.

The Spiritual Significance of Maha Shivratri

Maha Shivratri, one of the most revered Hindu festivals, is observed through fasting, prayers, and various rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees offer milk, sweets, Dhatura flowers, and Bel leaves at Shiva temples, believing these acts bring happiness, well-being, and ultimately, salvation.

Many observe a night-long vigil, lighting bonfires, chanting hymns, and performing traditional music and dance. Cultural programs are being held at Gaurighat, Mrigasthali, and Kirateshwar ashrams, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.

The festival holds deep spiritual significance, symbolizing the triumph of knowledge over ignorance. It is widely believed that on this day, Lord Shiva grants mercy and blessings to those in need, making it an occasion of immense religious importance.

Pashupatinath Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, continues to be a beacon of faith, drawing devotees from Nepal, India, and other South Asian countries for this grand celebration.
