Ayodhya (UP), Feb 3 (PTI) – The brutal murder of a 22-year-old Dalit woman in Ayodhya has sparked outrage, with police arresting three suspects and opposition leaders slamming the Yogi Adityanath-led government over law and order concerns.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Raj Karan Nayar confirmed the arrest of Hari Ram Kori, Vijay Sahu, and Digvijay Singh in connection with the crime. According to officials, the trio allegedly killed the woman under the influence of alcohol before dumping her unclothed body in a secluded canal near her village. The woman had been missing since Thursday, and her body was discovered on Saturday.
The horrifying incident has intensified political tensions ahead of the Milkipur bypoll on February 5, with opposition parties using it to target the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over deteriorating law and order in Uttar Pradesh.
Faizabad MP Awadhesh Prasad, also from SP, met the victim’s grieving family on Sunday and later broke down at a press conference, saying, “I failed to save her.” Prasad vowed to raise the matter in Parliament and even threatened to resign if justice was not served.
His emotional reaction prompted Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to hit back, accusing him of engaging in “theatrics” and claiming that some criminals linked to Samajwadi Party could be involved in the crime.
Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated, “Had the administration listened to the family’s pleas when the woman went missing, her life could have been saved. The anti-Bahujan BJP rule, especially in Uttar Pradesh, is leading to heinous atrocities, injustice, and the murders of Dalits.”
Priyanka Gandhi echoed similar sentiments, condemning the "barbaric and chilling" nature of the crime. "Such cruel incidents shame humanity. The girl was missing for three days, yet the police did nothing. In BJP’s ‘Jungle Raj’, Dalits, tribals, backward, and poor people have no one to hear their cries,” she said.
