Mumbai, Feb 27: In a shocking incident in Pune’s Katraj area, three individuals were arrested for allegedly assaulting a man and setting his motorcycle on fire, city police confirmed on Thursday. The dramatic episode, captured on video, went viral on social media, further intensifying concerns over the city's law and order situation.
According to the police, the altercation stemmed from a dispute between the complainant and the accused. The complainant alleged that the perpetrators not only beat him up but also attempted to set him on fire. However, an official statement from the police clarified that there was no such attempt, and CCTV footage of the incident has been secured.
The confrontation escalated as the victim was on his way to file a complaint. The accused reportedly intercepted him, extracted fuel from his bike, and set the vehicle ablaze. The complainant managed to escape unscathed, police added.
A case has been registered at Bharati Vidyapith police station, and the three accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including rioting. Further investigations are underway.
The incident has sparked political reactions, with Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) leader and Baramati MP Supriya Sule condemning the state of law enforcement in Pune. Sharing the viral video on X (formerly Twitter), she expressed concern over the increasing crime rate and criticized the authorities for their alleged negligence.
Sule also claimed that police had prior information about the dispute but failed to act in time. "Had the police arrived promptly, this incident could have been prevented. It reflects the home ministry's carelessness regarding law and order. I urge the home minister to review the situation in Pune and take immediate corrective measures," she wrote, tagging Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
This incident comes amid growing public outrage over a recent rape case at Swargate bus station, adding to the concerns over Pune’s deteriorating safety situation.
