Three held for killing driver to steal car for jewellery shop robbery

Pune, Feb 3 (PTI) – In a chilling case of premeditated robbery gone wrong, Pune Rural Police have arrested three individuals for allegedly murdering a 56-year-old car driver last month. The accused, who had planned to use the stolen vehicle for a jewellery store heist, abandoned their plan after the murder, an official confirmed on Monday.

According to Inspector Dinesh Tayde of Alephata police station, the victim, Rajesh Gaikwad, was targeted by four men—Vishal Chavan, Mayur Solase, Ruturaj Sonawane, and Yuvraj Shinde—who had met while serving time in Nashik Jail. After their release, the group conspired to rob a jewellery store and arranged their getaway vehicle by posing as passengers in Gaikwad’s car on January 28.

During the journey, the accused attacked Gaikwad, leading to his death. However, following the murder, they abandoned their robbery plan out of fear. Gaikwad’s body was dumped near Santwadi on the Nashik-Pune highway, while his vehicle was left behind at Kasara Ghat.

Police apprehended Chavan, Solase, and Sonawane on January 31, while the fourth suspect, Yuvraj Shinde, remains at large. Efforts are underway to track him down, Inspector Tayde stated.

Authorities continue to investigate the case as they pursue the fugitive suspect.
