Shimla, Feb 3 (PTI) – Tibetans born in India after 1987 have the right to vote in Indian elections, Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania stated on Monday.

Pathania made this remark during a meeting with a delegation from the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, according to an official statement.

The Tibetan parliamentary delegation comprised MPs Dondup Tashi and Tsering Yangchen, along with Chief Representative Officer of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile in Shimla, Sewang Phingchok, and Secretary Palden.

The delegation visited the Assembly to express gratitude for the unwavering support extended by the Indian government and the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly to the Tibetan community.

During discussions, the Tibetan MPs acknowledged India’s long-standing hospitality, which has allowed the Tibetan Government-in-Exile to operate smoothly from its headquarters in Dharamshala. They reiterated their commitment to the Tibetan independence movement.

Speaker Pathania underlined the deep historical and cultural ties between India and Tibet, noting that Tibetans have lived in India for over 65 years, with Dharamshala emerging as the center of their struggle.

"The Indian government has always stood by the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, and our support will continue without hesitation," Pathania assured.

Dharamshala, home to the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, serves as the headquarters of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, playing a crucial role in their continued advocacy for Tibetan independence.
