Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh – February 26: A two-year-old tigress that wandered into a village in the buffer zone of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve was allegedly killed by villagers on Wednesday after it attacked two locals, officials confirmed.
According to Saureesh Sahai, Deputy Director of the Dudhwa Buffer Zone, the tigress entered Phulwaria village in Palia tehsil, where it reportedly attacked two individuals. In retaliation, the enraged villagers clubbed the animal to death on the spot.
Following the incident, forest officials retrieved the carcass and sent it to the range headquarters. Authorities have registered a case against unidentified persons at Palia police station under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, initiating a probe into the matter.
The injured villagers were admitted to a hospital, where their condition is reported to be stable.
Sahai further stated that a post-mortem examination of the tigress was conducted in accordance with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines. Additionally, viscera samples have been sent to ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly, for further analysis.
This incident has raised concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the region, highlighting the need for enhanced protection and conservation measures.
