Seoni (MP), Feb 4 (PTI) – A dramatic rescue operation unfolded on Tuesday in Madhya Pradesh's Seoni district, where a sub-adult tigress and a wild boar fell into a well following a failed hunting attempt. The incident occurred in the buffer area of Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR), near Hardua village in the Khawasa region.
According to Rajnish Kumar Singh, the Deputy Director of PTR, the tigress, approximately three years old, had been pursuing a wild boar when the chase went awry. In the midst of the hunt, the tigress lost her footing and tumbled into a well. The wild boar, attempting to flee, also ended up in the same water-filled pit.
Upon discovering the tigress struggling in the water, the forest department sprang into action. A team of nearly 60 rescuers, using specialized equipment, initiated a four-hour-long operation to extract the animals safely. A cot was lowered into the well with a rope, and the wild boar managed to climb onto it. Meanwhile, a hydraulic crane was employed to lower a cage into the well, capturing the tigress without harm.
After the successful operation, the rescued animals were transported for further care and observation. The tigress is set to be released into the Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary, which is part of the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve in Sagar district, as per the instructions of the state's Chief Wildlife Conservator.
The operation highlights the ongoing efforts of Madhya Pradesh’s forest department to ensure the safety of wildlife and swiftly address emergencies in the state's protected areas.
