Gqeberha (South Africa), Feb 3 (PTI) – Paarl Royals captain David Miller has heaped praise on veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik for his contributions in the SA20 league, emphasizing his valuable presence in the squad despite limited opportunities.

Karthik, playing his debut season in SA20, has scored 97 runs in six innings, including a notable 53 off 39 balls against Joburg Super Kings at Centurion on January 30. However, he lacked sufficient support from the other batters in that match.

Speaking ahead of the first qualifier against MI Cape Town, Miller highlighted Karthik’s vast experience and influence on the younger players.

"He has played for 20 years at the highest level and has immense experience. He has performed exceptionally well for India and in the IPL. Later, he transitioned into commentary and coaching, bringing a wealth of knowledge and wisdom. His presence is fantastic for the youngsters and even for me," Miller told PTI.

Although Karthik hasn’t had many opportunities this season, Miller acknowledged his crucial innings at the Wanderers under challenging conditions.

Miller Confident About Fitness Ahead of Champions Trophy

Addressing concerns about his fitness following an injury sustained during the SA20 match against Durban Super Giants, Miller reassured fans that he is in good shape ahead of the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19.

"I am feeling good. I took a week off, underwent a fitness test, and everything seems to be going well. Let's see how things are tomorrow morning," he said.

Joe Root’s Absence Not a Major Concern for Royals

With former England captain Joe Root leaving the tournament to join England’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against India, Miller remained unfazed, expressing confidence in the team’s depth.

"Of course, you can't replace a player of his caliber, but we have a very adaptable squad. The players stepping in are positive and highly skilled. In a few games, Root didn't score much, yet other players stepped up," he explained.

No Worries Over Recent Losses, Focus on T20 Mindset

Despite Paarl Royals losing their last two matches, Miller dismissed any concerns and emphasized the unpredictability of T20 cricket.

"Our consistency this season has been phenomenal. The last two losses are not a concern. Players are well-rested and in great shape. It just takes one or two players to deliver a match-winning performance. In T20 cricket, momentum can shift in a moment, so we just need to keep believing in ourselves," he stated.

Recognizing MI Cape Town’s strong performance this season, Miller acknowledged the challenge but saw it as a chance for the Royals to make a statement.

"They have many match-winners, but in T20, it's all about seizing the moment. One or two players stepping up can take the game away from the opposition," he added.

SA20’s Positive Impact on South African Cricket

Miller also credited SA20 for revitalizing South African cricket, lauding its impact on player development and fan engagement.

"It has been an unbelievable addition to cricket in this country. The crowds have been amazing, and the support is fantastic. Full credit to Graeme Smith and his team for marketing it so well. I believe it will go a long way in strengthening our cricket," he said.

Youngster Lhuan-dre Pretorius Impresses in Debut Season

Miller also showered praise on 18-year-old Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who has been a standout performer in his debut SA20 season, amassing 323 runs in 10 matches—the second-highest in the tournament so far.

"He is a sensational talent. The way he understands the game at such a young age is impressive. His timing, ability to pick the right length, and shot selection are outstanding. He can slog-sweep spinners and read the pace very well. I see a bright future ahead for him," Miller concluded.

With high stakes in the first qualifier against MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals will look to bounce back and make a strong statement in the SA20 playoffs.
