Two arrested for keeping blackbuck in Indore farmhouse

Indore, Feb 3 (PTI) – A farmhouse owner and an associate were arrested in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, for the illegal possession of a blackbuck and several exotic birds, a forest department official confirmed on Monday.

The arrests followed a raid conducted on January 31 by a joint team from the Tiger Strike Force and Indore forest division at a farmhouse. The operation led to the apprehension of Anil Gawde, the owner of the farmhouse, and Sagarmal Agarwal.

During the raid, officials discovered a blackbuck, along with a horn of the animal. Additionally, authorities seized two plum-headed parakeets, two rose-ringed parakeets, and three other exotic birds from the premises.

Both Gawde and Agarwal have been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which strictly prohibits the hunting and possession of protected species like the blackbuck, an endangered antelope.

A detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the extent of the illegal wildlife trade involved in this case.

Blackbuck Protection Laws in India

The blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) is classified as an endangered species and is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Any hunting, possession, or trade involving the species is strictly prohibited and carries severe legal consequences.

Authorities continue to intensify efforts to combat illegal wildlife trafficking, urging citizens to report any suspected violations to safeguard endangered species.
