Sent Threatening Letter with Gun Cartridges to Friend to Repay Debt
New Delhi, May 17 – In a disturbing incident in West Delhi's Punjabi Bagh, two brothers were arrested for allegedly attempting to extort money from a close friend by sending him a threatening letter accompanied by two empty gun cartridges, police said on Saturday.The accused, Rohit Nagpal (35) and his younger brother Sagar (30), had reportedly devised the plan to overcome mounting debts from severe business losses. According to officials, Rohit had taken a loan of ₹80 lakh, which he struggled to repay.
Courier Threat Raises Alarm
On May 13, victim Rohit Chauhan received a suspicious courier at his home. The package contained photographs of his wife and child, two empty cartridges, and a letter demanding a substantial sum in US dollars. The letter warned that his family would be harmed if the money was not paid.Shaken by the threat, Chauhan immediately reported the matter to the police. A case was registered and a detailed investigation was launched.
Police Trace Threat to Victim’s Friend
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer said investigators tracked the courier's origin and analyzed the threat materials. Suspecting the involvement of someone close to the victim, police questioned several acquaintances, including Rohit Nagpal."Upon sustained questioning, Rohit confessed to orchestrating the extortion plan," Veer said. Further investigation revealed that Rohit and Sagar had intended to make the threat appear like it came from an organized criminal gang.
Weapons and Digital Evidence Recovered
The brothers sourced the empty cartridges from a local gun house and collected personal details about the victim’s family to make the threat more convincing. They used a scooter to deliver the materials and coordinated their actions using mobile phones and a laptop — all of which have been recovered by the police.Police confirmed that while Rohit is a graduate, Sagar holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Applications (BCA).
Both have been arrested and are currently in custody. Authorities are now investigating whether the duo was involved in any similar incidents in the past.
