Fatal Collision Near Bhognadih Involves NTPC-Owned Trains and Tracks
Ranchi, April 1 – In a tragic accident during the early hours of Tuesday, two drivers lost their lives and four others sustained injuries when two NTPC-operated goods trains collided in Jharkhand’s Sahebganj district.The head-on collision occurred around 3 a.m. near Bhognadih in the Barhait police station area, according to Sahebganj Sub-Divisional Police Officer Kishore Tirkey.
NTPC Infrastructure Involved, Not Indian Railways
Both the trains and the tracks involved in the accident are owned by power utility major NTPC, and are primarily used for coal transportation to its power facilities. The collision occurred on a route known as the NTPC Lalmatia MGR line, which links the Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Station in Bihar's Bhagalpur district to the Farakka Power Plantin Murshidabad district, West Bengal.Speaking on the incident, Eastern Railway spokesperson Kausik Mitra clarified, “The goods trains and the tracks belong to the NTPC. It has nothing to do with the Indian Railways.”
Rescue and Restoration Efforts Underway
Although the accident was outside the purview of Indian Railways, NTPC reached out for support. A 140-tonne cranewas arranged by the Malda Division of Eastern Railway from Sahibganj to assist with restoration.The Railways confirmed its ongoing cooperation, stating, “Indian Railways is extending all possible help to NTPC authorities required for restoration.”
Investigations into the cause of the collision are expected to follow as rescue operations continue.
