Amravati (Maharashtra), Feb 4 (PTI): In a remarkable medical case, two fetuses were successfully removed from the abdomen of a three-day-old baby boy in Amravati, Maharashtra, just days after his mother was diagnosed with a rare condition known as 'fetus in fetu'. This anomaly, where one fetus is found inside the body of another, is extremely rare, occurring in only about one in 500,000 births worldwide.
The 32-year-old woman from Buldhana district, who had been experiencing a normal pregnancy, underwent a routine sonography last month at 35 weeks. It was during this scan that Dr. Prasad Agarwal, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Buldhana Women's Hospital, noticed something unusual. While the fetus appeared to be growing normally, the scan revealed an abnormal structure inside the abdomen—an almost complete, malformed fetus.
Recognizing the rare condition, Dr. Agarwal immediately suspected 'fetus in fetu', which is among the rarest medical occurrences. The diagnosis was later confirmed by Dr. Shruti Thorat, a radiologist. The condition occurs when one fetus fails to fully develop and becomes engulfed by its twin. This phenomenon is so rare that only around 200 cases have been reported globally, with 10-15 of those in India.
The woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy on February 1 at the Buldhana Women's Hospital. However, shortly after the birth, both mother and child were transferred to the Amravati Divisional Hospital for further treatment. On February 4, a team of medical experts, under the supervision of Dr. Usha Gajbhiye, conducted a successful operation to remove two small, twin-like fetuses from the newborn’s abdomen.
Dr. Gajbhiye, who oversaw the operation, explained that the removed fetuses, which resembled fully formed twins with limbs, were safely extracted. Fortunately, both the baby and his mother are in stable condition following the procedure. "The fetuses had well-formed hands and legs, which is quite unusual for this condition," Dr. Gajbhiye noted. "The surgery went smoothly, and both mother and child are doing well now."
This case is a rare medical phenomenon that has captured attention due to its unusual nature and the successful intervention by the medical team.
