Ukrainian actor held in Torres case possessed fake birth certificate, claimed to be Indian: police

Mumbai, February 4 (PTI) – Ukrainian actor Armen Ataine, arrested in connection with the Torres investment scam, allegedly possessed a forged birth certificate and falsely claimed Indian nationality, Mumbai Police informed a court on Monday.

Ataine, taken into custody last week, was remanded in 14-day judicial custody after his police custody ended. The authorities did not seek an extension but indicated they might apply for fresh remand if necessary.

According to the remand note submitted by the police, Ataine presented various documents, including an Aadhaar card, driving license, and birth certificate, to support his claim of being an Indian citizen. However, upon verification, officials found discrepancies in the birth certificate, which was purportedly issued by the F Ward of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Upon further investigation, it was confirmed that the document was forged.

Ataine's arrest is linked to the fraudulent operations of Platinum Hern Pvt Ltd, the company behind Torres jewellery brand, which allegedly scammed investors out of crores of rupees through Ponzi and multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes.

So far, six individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. Authorities revealed that more than 10,800 investors have lodged complaints, with the total known fraud amount exceeding ₹57 crore. Victims allege they were lured into investing with promises of high returns.

The Mumbai Police continue to investigate the scam, and further arrests or legal action may follow as more evidence emerges.
