UN Leaders Hail India-Pakistan Ceasefire as Positive Step Toward Regional Peace.webp

United Nations, May 11 — Top United Nations leaders have welcomed the recent understanding between India and Pakistan to cease all military actions and cross-border firing, describing it as a meaningful move toward de-escalating tensions and fostering regional stability.

President of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Philemon Yang, expressed his approval in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the agreement marks “a meaningful step towards de-escalation” and underscores both countries’ commitment to peace. Yang emphasized the importance of continued diplomacy and dialogue, urging both nations to resolve their differences in line with the UN Charter and international law.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres also extended his support for the development shortly after India announced the mutual understanding on Saturday. Calling it a “positive step,” Guterres noted that the decision could play a vital role in easing long-standing tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

This diplomatic breakthrough follows heightened hostilities after the Indian armed forces conducted targeted strikes on terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) last week. The strikes were a response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which had significantly escalated tensions between the two countries.

The ceasefire announcement has been seen as a crucial opportunity to rebuild trust and reduce conflict in a region historically marked by volatility.
