Panaji (Goa), March 3, 2025 – Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra assured on Monday that the Indian government possesses sufficient wheat stocks to meet the requirements of welfare schemes and undertake necessary market interventions to maintain price stability. His statement came during a conference organized by the Roller Flour Millers' Federation of India (RFMFI).
In his written address, Chopra highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring food security for every citizen of India. This is achieved through initiatives such as the efficient procurement of food grains, safe storage, and timely distribution through programs like the Targeted Public Distribution Scheme (TPDS) and other welfare schemes (OWS).
Chopra further mentioned that this fiscal year, the Centre has offloaded 30 lakh tonnes of wheat to flour millers and processors under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS). He emphasized that it is crucial for these benefits to be passed on to consumers.
"We have sufficient stocks of wheat to meet our own requirements and also for necessary market interventions. This year, the government has offloaded 30 lakh tonnes of wheat to processors and millers through OMSS(D)," Chopra stated.
India's wheat production reached a record 1,132 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 crop year (July-June), and Chopra expressed confidence that the 2024-25 crop year would see similarly high yields due to expanded acreage.
In line with these efforts, the government is also pursuing an ambitious silo construction program to enhance bulk storage and streamline wheat logistics. This initiative aims to improve storage distribution and efficiency in the movement of wheat across the country.
"Ensuring food security and self-reliance in wheat production is a key government priority, and the milling industry plays a vital role in this effort," Chopra remarked. He also acknowledged the Roller Flour Millers' Federation for its valuable market insights, which have contributed to shaping policies and strategic planning in the sector.
The Federation has been instrumental in addressing industry challenges and collaborating closely with the government to ensure smooth supply chains, Chopra noted. He also urged the Federation to maintain oversight over its members to ensure that the benefits of OMSS conducted by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) reach the consumers and curb inflationary trends.
Over 600 delegates are attending the global conference organized by the RFMFI, which boasts 1,800 direct and indirect members.
This commitment from the government is expected to help maintain the stability of wheat prices in the market while securing food for the population under various welfare schemes.
