New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim bail to expelled BJP leader and Unnao rape case convict Kuldeep Singh Sengar to undergo eye surgery. The court suspended his sentence until February 4, allowing him to receive treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
A bench comprising Justices Yashwant Varma and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar noted that Sengar’s cataract surgery is scheduled for Tuesday and directed him to surrender before jail authorities on February 5.
This is not the first instance of interim bail being granted to the politician for surgery. However, the survivor's lawyer opposed the plea, arguing that Sengar should not be granted interim bail indefinitely.
Sengar’s request for an extension of interim bail is linked to his appeal against the December 2019 trial court verdict, which convicted him in the 2017 Unnao rape case. He has sought the quashing of his conviction and sentence, which remains pending before the high court.
The case, along with other related matters, was transferred from a trial court in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi following a Supreme Court directive on August 1, 2019.

Sengar’s counsel informed the court that his surgery was previously delayed due to circumstances beyond his control. The lawyer further argued that Sengar requires an additional two days of medical admission at AIIMS for the procedure."We are of the opinion that the sentence warrants suspension for the applicant’s medical procedure, fixed for February 4, 2025, subject to conditions identical to those set forth in the December 20, 2024, order. The applicant shall surrender on February 5 before the jail superintendent," the court stated.
