Bijnor, May 17 — A police constable died of electrocution in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district after jumping into a canal while chasing criminals, unaware of a live electric wire submerged in the water, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The incident took place on Friday night near the Gadhi crossroad on Nagina road, where criminals were reportedly assaulting a truck driver. Upon receiving the alert, Police Response Vehicle (PRV) constables Manoj (38) and Ganga Ram rushed to the scene.
As they arrived, the assailants opened fire and attempted to escape in a car. During the high-speed chase, the criminals’ vehicle lost control near Salamabad-Bharaira, struck an electric pole, and plunged into a canal. The collision brought down a live electric wire into the water.
Unaware of the danger, both constables jumped into the canal to apprehend the fleeing criminals. Tragically, Constable Manoj was fatally electrocuted. A police team arrived quickly, disconnected the power supply, and pulled both officers out of the canal.
They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Manoj was declared dead. Constable Ganga Ram is currently under treatment, according to Superintendent of Police Abhishek.
One of the suspects, identified as Neeraj, was found injured at the site and has been hospitalized. His two accomplices managed to escape, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend them. Authorities have sent Manoj’s body for post-mortem examination.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the local police force and highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
