Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, March 1:
Family members of a man from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, are deeply worried after learning he may be among those trapped in the avalanche that struck Uttarakhand's Chamoli district early Friday morning.
The incident occurred when a massive avalanche buried a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp situated between Mana and Badrinath between 5:30 AM and 6:00 AM. According to the Indian Army, 55 workers were trapped inside eight containers and a shed.
Rescue operations swiftly commenced, resulting in the recovery of 49 workers alive. Tragically, one labourer was found dead, and rescue efforts continue for the remaining five who remain missing beneath the snow.
Ballia Resident Among Missing Workers
Ram Sujan Singh, a supervisor originally from Chilkhar village in Rasra, Ballia, has been identified on the official list of 55 workers trapped by the avalanche. Ram Sujan had been working in Chamoli since January 2024, according to his family.Speaking to the media, Ram Sujan's son, Raj Singh, expressed deep concern, saying the family had not received any updates since Monday when they last spoke to him.
Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh of Ballia also confirmed that no further information regarding Ram Sujan's condition was available at present."We do not have any information about how my father is," said Raj Singh.
Condition of Rescued Workers
Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari confirmed that 11 rescued labourers had been admitted to the Army hospital in Jyotirmath. Among them, one is in critical condition, while others have sustained fractures and minor injuries. Vital signs of all but one are stable, and specialist doctors are conducting necessary medical examinations.Rescue operations by the Army and local authorities are continuing intensively, aiming to locate the remaining missing individuals.
