Mahakumbh Nagar, Feb 3 (PTI): The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a special initiative to facilitate the sacred Sangam Snan (ritual bath) for 2,000 senior citizens by the culmination of the Maha Kumbh on February 26.
In a significant effort to support underprivileged communities, the Social Welfare Department has set up a dedicated pandal along the banks of the Triveni Sangam. This initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the National Medicos Organization and Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) to provide much-needed assistance to elderly and differently-abled devotees.
For the first time in Maha Kumbh history, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has introduced a special camp catering to the needs of senior citizens and individuals with hearing impairments. This camp offers:
Free medical examinations
Assistive devices such as hearing aids
Accommodation and religious assistance
A key component of this initiative, called Shravan Kumbh, has already benefited thousands by offering medical evaluations and hearing aids to those in need, the government statement said.
As part of a comprehensive support system, the state government has also established a 100-bed ashram within the Kumbh area. This facility provides:
Comfortable lodging for elderly devotees
Accessibility for participation in religious rituals
Dedicated services for residents of state-run old-age homes
So far, over 500 senior citizens from districts including Mirzapur, Gonda, Siddharthnagar, Bhadohi, Kaushambi, Hardoi, Sitapur, and Lucknow have taken part in the Maha Kumbh. The government aims to facilitate the participation of 2,000 elderly devotees in the Amrit Snan by February 26.
Emphasizing the government's commitment to elderly welfare, Asim Arun, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare, highlighted the efforts made for their safety, dignity, and healthcare.
"The double-engine government is continuously working to ensure the welfare of senior citizens. The Social Welfare Department's initiative in the Maha Kumbh has been a great success, benefitting a large number of elderly individuals," Arun stated.
The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13, will conclude on February 26 at the sacred Triveni Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers.
The event has witnessed an unprecedented turnout, with nearly 35 crore devotees having taken a dip in the Sangam as of Monday evening. With two more key bathing dates—February 12 (Maghi Purnima) and February 26 (Mahashivratri)—the government anticipates the footfall to cross 50 crore by the festival’s end.
This massive religious gathering continues to attract millions of pilgrims from across the globe, reinforcing its status as one of the largest human congregations in the world.
