UP: Woman kills neighbour over alleged blackmail, arrested

Bareilly (UP), Feb 2 (PTI) – In a shocking incident in Ghur Samsapur village, under the jurisdiction of the Bhojipura police station, a 35-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday for allegedly murdering a 32-year-old man who had been blackmailing and harassing her.

Discovery of the Body

According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Northern) Mukesh Chandra Mishra, the victim—identified as Iqbal—was found dead on January 30. His body lay on the stairs inside his house, prompting an immediate investigation.

Murder Allegation

On February 1, Iqbal’s wife, Shahnaz, registered a complaint accusing their neighbor of killing her husband. The police detained two suspects for questioning. Initially, the woman in custody provided misleading information but later confessed under intense interrogation.

Confession to the Crime

The accused revealed that Iqbal had been blackmailing her with recorded phone calls and had allegedly raped her multiple times. Unable to tolerate the continued harassment, she decided to take drastic action.

On January 29, after Iqbal came home alone, the accused lured him to meet her. Iqbal then gave her two sedative pills, instructing her to mix them in her husband’s tea, which rendered him unconscious by around 8 PM. At approximately 11:40 PM, she went to Iqbal’s house, where he initiated physical relations. Seizing the moment, she wrapped her hands around his neck and strangled him to death. She then dragged his body to the stairs, left the house, and returned home.

Investigation Ongoing

When neighbors discovered Iqbal’s body the following morning, they alerted the police, who informed Shahnaz. Iqbal, a zari-zardozi artisan, had regular interactions in the village, during which he became acquainted with the accused.

Police have sent Iqbal’s body for postmortem, and a thorough investigation is underway.
