New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) – The United States is intensifying its crackdown on illegal immigration, with reports emerging of a US military aircraft repatriating some undocumented Indian nationals. The deportation process, marking the first round of removals, comes just weeks after Donald Trump secured his second term as the US president.
President Trump has reaffirmed his commitment to a stringent immigration policy, signing multiple executive orders aimed at curbing illegal migration. His administration has consistently emphasized the enforcement of border laws and the removal of undocumented individuals.
Responding to queries regarding the deportation flight carrying illegal migrants to India, a US embassy spokesperson declined to disclose specific details but reinforced Washington’s firm stance on immigration enforcement.
"I can't share any details on those inquiries, but I can share, on the record, that the United States is vigorously enforcing its border, tightening immigration laws, and removing illegal migrants," the official stated. "These actions send a clear message: illegal migration is not worth the risk."
Trump's tough approach on immigration was a key aspect of his recent conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 27. Following the discussion, Trump expressed confidence that India would cooperate on the issue, saying the country "will do what is right" regarding the repatriation of illegal Indian immigrants.
The Indian government has maintained its stance against illegal immigration. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated last month that India is willing to take back its citizens residing illegally in the US, provided their nationality is verified.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, speaking on January 24, underscored India’s opposition to illegal immigration due to its connection to various forms of organized crime. "We will take them back provided documents are shared with us so that we can verify their nationality, that they are indeed Indians," he stated. However, he added that it would be "premature" to speculate on the exact number of undocumented Indian nationals currently in the US.
The developments signal a firm and coordinated effort by both nations to address illegal migration, with further deportations likely to follow in the coming months.
