Bundelkhand Region to Face the Worst; State Issues Health and Livestock Safety Advisories
Lucknow, April 6 — Uttar Pradesh is headed for a blistering summer, with the Meteorological Department forecasting prolonged periods of above-normal temperatures and frequent heatwaves from April to June 2025. The state’s Bundelkhand region is expected to be the hardest hit, with severe implications for both human and animal health.Daytime Temperatures to Consistently Cross 40°C
“Maximum temperatures across Uttar Pradesh are expected to remain above normal throughout the summer,” said Atul Kumar Singh, a meteorological official. “Daytime readings will consistently exceed the 40-degree Celsius mark, and in some areas, may even cross 45 degrees.”Adding to the discomfort, night-time temperatures are also projected to remain unusually high. “Minimum temperatures will stay above normal, offering little relief even after sunset,” Singh added.
Early April Offers Glimpse of Sweltering Months Ahead
The first week of April has already delivered a stark preview of what lies ahead. Several cities — including Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Amethi, Ghazipur, Sultanpur, and Hamirpur — have consistently recorded daytime temperatures above 40°C. On Saturday, Prayagraj registered a sweltering 41.6°C, which is 4.2 degrees abovethe seasonal average.The department has also predicted that rainfall is likely to remain below normal during this period, compounding the heat stress.
Surge in Heatwave Days Expected
Forecasts point toward an above-normal number of heatwave days across the state, especially in April 2025, which could escalate risks for public health and agriculture.Medical Experts Warn of Health Hazards
Doctors warn that the risk from heatwaves extends beyond general discomfort. “High temperatures can be managed with proper hydration and shelter. But heatwave conditions interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature, leading to severe dehydration and critical health complications,” said Dr. Shantanu Mishra, a general practitioner based in Lucknow.Government Initiatives to Mitigate Impact
In light of the alarming forecast, the Uttar Pradesh government has activated precautionary measures. Relief Commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami confirmed that district administrations have been instructed to prepare for the extreme conditions.“District hospitals have been asked to gear up for a possible increase in heat-related ailments. Public advisories on hydration, work-hour adjustments, and cooling shelters are also being rolled out,” Goswami stated.
Protecting Livestock Amid Scorching Conditions
The Animal Husbandry Department is also ramping up efforts to safeguard livestock. “We have issued directives to all cattle shelters to ensure shaded enclosures and adequate water supply. Veterinary units are on high alert to assist farmers, especially in rural Bundelkhand,” said Animal Husbandry Minister Dharmpal Singh.With rainfall unlikely to offer respite and heatwave conditions expected to intensify, both residents and authorities in Uttar Pradesh are preparing for one of the harshest summers in recent memory.
