CM Yogi Adityanath directs officials to intensify public safety efforts amid severe heat conditions.

Lucknow, May 17 – In response to a persistent and severe heatwave sweeping across Uttar Pradesh, the state government has rolled out an extensive set of precautionary measures to protect citizens from heat-related illnesses. With some regions' temperatures breaching the 45-degree Celsius mark, authorities are on high alert.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed the relief commissioner's office and the health department to take immediate action based on warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). These efforts aim to reduce the risk of heatstroke and related health complications.

Health Department Launches Awareness Drive

Acting swiftly on the Chief Minister's directives, the state health department has released detailed guidelines for public safety. According to Partha Sarathi Sen Sharma, Principal Secretary of the Health Department, a statewide campaign is underway to raise awareness on how to prevent heatstroke and manage exposure to extreme temperatures.

To prevent heatstroke and manage it, avoid direct sun exposure and wear light-coloured, breathable clothing. People are also encouraged to use umbrellas and sunglasses when outdoors and to stay inside between 12 noon and 4 pm, the hottest part of the day.

Key Recommendations for Public Safety

The advisory includes several crucial health tips:
  • Drink plenty of fluids such as water, lemon juice, coconut water, and shikanji
  • Use curtains or blinds to keep indoor areas cool
  • Avoid stale or high-protein food on an empty stomach
  • Reduce intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, and carbonated drinks
  • Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles
Posters and pamphlets illustrating the symptoms of heat-related illnesses are being widely distributed. These symptoms include a body temperature above 40°C, red and dry skin, dizziness, muscle weakness, shortness of breath, nausea, and headaches.

Immediate First Aid and Emergency Response

In cases of suspected heatstroke, citizens are urged to:

  • Move the affected person to a shaded or cool area
  • Offer cool water to drink, if conscious
  • Apply cold water through a bath or a damp cloth
  • Seek emergency medical attention immediately by calling the ambulance service 108

Special Advisory for Vulnerable Groups

Additional precautions have been advised for children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. The guidelines recommend scheduling labourers and construction workers and ensuring regular breaks in shaded areas.

Parents are advised to prevent children from playing outdoors during midday hours, ensure they wear loose, light clothing, and drink sufficient water.

Government Appeal for Vigilance

The Health Department and the National Health Mission have jointly appealed to the public to remain alert during the heatwave. Citizens are encouraged to visit the nearest health centre or dial 108 for ambulance services if they notice severe symptoms.

With heatwave conditions expected to persist, the state government continues to monitor the situation closely and ensure that proactive steps are taken to safeguard public health.
