Uttar Pradesh on High Alert Amid Bird Flu Threat: CM Yogi Orders Strict Vigilance in Zoos and Sanctuaries

Lucknow, May 13 – In response to the looming threat of H5N1 avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath convened a high-level meeting on Tuesday, directing officials to implement stringent preventive measures across the state’s zoos and wildlife sanctuaries.

Focus on Wildlife and Public Safety​

According to an official statement, CM Adityanath underscored that safeguarding animals and birds in zoos, bird sanctuaries, national parks, wetlands, and cow shelters must be treated as the highest priority. The Chief Minister ordered officials to promptly enforce all necessary precautions as per the advisories from both the central and state governments to mitigate the risk of infection.

Preventive Measures and Surveillance Protocols​

Among the key steps mandated:

• Sanitisation of zoo premises should be done regularly.
• Use of blow torches in designated areas to eliminate pathogens.
• Health screenings for all wild animals and birds to identify early signs of infection.
• Strict food inspections to rule out contamination risks.

The statement further mentioned that all zoo personnel must be educated about avian flu symptoms and safety measures, and be provided with PPE kits and other essential safety gear. Task assignments for staff working within enclosures will be regulated based on the level of exposure risk.

Poultry Farms and Human Transmission Risk​

CM Adityanath also called for strict surveillance of poultry farms, adherence to biosecurity protocols, and control of the movement of poultry products to prevent potential virus spread. The Health Department has been directed to evaluate the possible implications of H5N1 on humans to prevent any chance of zoonotic transmission.

Inter-agency Coordination and Expert Guidance​

To bolster preparedness, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of regular communication with national institutions such as the Central Zoo Authority (New Delhi), National Centre for Disease Control, Ministry of Health, Department of Fisheries and Dairy, and the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Bareilly.

Additionally, he called for reinforced coordination among District Administrations, Chief Medical Officers, and Chief Veterinary Officers to ensure full compliance with all issued directives.

The government’s proactive measures aim to create a robust defense against the spread of avian influenza, with a comprehensive strategy targeting wildlife protection and public health.
