Significant Boost for Varaha’s Sustainable Carbon Initiatives in India and Nepal
Varaha, a prominent Indian company specializing in carbon removal projects across Asia, has announced a substantial multimillion-dollar investment from Conductor Capital, a UK-based investment manager focused on energy commodities and environmental products. This significant funding is set to accelerate Varaha's expansion efforts, enabling the company to extend its carbon reduction projects to more farmers across diverse regions, particularly in India and Nepal.
Enhancing Carbon Removal Across Multiple Pathways
Since its establishment in 2022, Varaha has successfully executed 14 technology-driven carbon removal initiatives across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Kenya. These projects include innovative strategies such as regenerative agriculture, afforestation, biochar application, and enhanced rock weathering.
Through these initiatives, Varaha has successfully transitioned over 100,000 smallholder farmers to sustainable agricultural practices, effectively removing more than two million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (CO₂e) from the atmosphere. Notably, Varaha became India's first project developer to issue carbon removal credits for biochar through the Puro.Earth registry. In January 2025, the company also achieved a major milestone by selling 100,000 carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits to Google, marking Google's first large-scale purchase of such credits in India.
Strategic Investment to Accelerate Climate Impact
Speaking on the strategic partnership, Madhur Jain, Co-founder of Varaha, stated:
"This investment from Conductor Capital is transformative for Varaha. It represents a significant endorsement of our model and the urgent need for sustainable environmental solutions. It enhances the potential impact of Conductor Capital's project investment by providing a clear pathway for scaling up operations and integrating into India's broader carbon reduction strategies. We are excited to lead the way in creating scalable, sustainable solutions that address climate change at its core, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations."
Marcello Romano, Chief Investment Officer at Conductor Capital, added:
"We are excited to support Varaha’s innovative approach to carbon project development. Our investment reflects our commitment to backing solutions that offer substantial environmental and social benefits, and Varaha’s tech-driven platform, coupled with its rigorous implementation expertise, stands out in this regard."
