Chennai, Feb 2 (PTI) – Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has reaffirmed his party’s ambition of securing victory in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Marking the first anniversary of the party’s announcement, he called on cadres to begin working earnestly toward this goal.

At the party headquarters, Vijay hoisted the TVK flag and unveiled busts of key ideological figures, including Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, K. Kamaraj, Velu Nachiyar, and Anjalai Ammal. These leaders, he said, embody the party’s guiding principles of secularism, social justice, and public welfare.

TVK’s Vision for 2026

Addressing party workers, Vijay described the upcoming Assembly elections as the “first step” towards building lasting respect for TVK’s work among the people. He cited the 1967 and 1977 elections—when the DMK and AIADMK first rose to power—as precedents, asserting that a similar breakthrough is possible for TVK in 2026with dedicated grassroots efforts.

He encouraged cadres to initiate welfare activities that would foster public confidence in the party and emphasized that people’s power (“Makkal Sakthi”) would be the driving force behind TVK’s success.

Call for a New Political Realignment

Vijay reiterated TVK’s unique stance on power-sharing, contrasting it with the Dravidian parties’ history of governance. Since 1967, the DMK and AIADMK have never shared power with allies, but Vijay has indicated openness to forming coalitions—fueling speculation about a potential political realignment in Tamil Nadu.

Issue-Based Politics Over Personal Attacks

In a statement, Vijay clarified that TVK’s politics would focus on public issues rather than personal attacks on rival leaders. He cited the party’s stance against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed Parandur airport project as examples of its commitment to people-centric politics.

Reflecting on TVK’s first year, Vijay acknowledged that the party had faced opposition and ridicule, yet had remained steadfast in its mission. The ongoing appointment of district-level and top party functionaries, he said, was part of strengthening the party’s organizational framework.

TVK’s Political Journey and Future Plans

Vijay officially launched Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam on February 2, 2024, submitting an application for registration with the Election Commission on the same day. He emphasized that his transition from Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (a social welfare organization) to a full-fledged political party was necessary to bring about comprehensive social, economic, and political reforms.

Dismissing politics as a profession or industry, Vijay reiterated that for him, it remains a sacred duty in service of the people.

In September 2024, the Election Commission officially registered TVK, and Vijay has since expressed confidence that his party will emerge as Tamil Nadu’s leading political force.

With the 2026 elections approaching, TVK’s next phase of action will be crucial in shaping its electoral prospects and political trajectory in the state.
