New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) – As India gears up for the highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025, former cricketer Suresh Raina has emphasized the importance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's form in determining the team's success.
The tournament, set to commence on February 19 in Pakistan and conclude on March 9, will see India playing all their matches in Dubai under the hybrid model agreement.
Speaking to Star Sports, Raina highlighted Rohit Sharma’s resurgence in ODI cricket since the 2023 World Cup, where his strike rate soared to around 119-120, making him a crucial asset for India.
"For Rohit and Virat, past performances bring confidence. They complement each other well, and if they fire, India's campaign will be in a strong position," said Raina.
India’s Tough Group and Spin Options
India finds itself in a challenging Group Stage alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. Discussing the team composition, Raina stressed the importance of the spin department, noting that Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel will play vital roles."Jadeja is a certainty in ODIs. Kuldeep is coming back from injury, but Axar has been consistent. Dubai pitches will have some seam movement, but spinners will be key, and their form will be crucial," Raina explained.
England ODIs: A Crucial Tune-Up
Before heading to Dubai, India will face England in a three-match ODI series at home, a series Raina believes will serve as an ideal platform for Kohli and Rohit to regain form."Virat knows how to switch on and off in white-ball cricket. He has scored the most runs against England, so his energy will be high. Plus, the venues—Nagpur, Ahmedabad, and Cuttack—are high-scoring, which will benefit him," Raina noted.
Rohit’s Captaincy and Final Shot at ICC Glory
Discussing Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Raina praised his attacking approach and tactical acumen, particularly in handling bowlers like Mohammed Shami and spinners in crunch situations."Rohit’s success with the bat reflects in his captaincy. This could be his last ICC trophy as captain, and if he wins, he will be the first Indian to secure four ICC trophies," Raina remarked.
With India eyeing its third Champions Trophy title, the performances of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could be the defining factors in their quest for glory.
