Mumbai, Feb 28: The United States Consulate in Mumbai has granted visas to the family members of Neelam Shinde, an Indian student who suffered severe injuries in a road accident in California. Shinde, currently in a coma at a hospital in San Francisco, has shown slight improvement, according to her father, Tanaji Shinde.

The visa approval came a day after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) intervened, taking up the family's urgent request with US authorities. Speaking about the situation, Tanaji Shinde recounted how he first learned of the accident through a call from Neelam’s roommate on February 16. However, detailed information about the incident only reached the family through Neelam's uncle two days later.

"We visited the US Consulate in Mumbai today, where they conducted an interview and granted visas within half an hour. We will leave for the US tomorrow. The support from both the Union and Maharashtra governments, as well as the media, has been immense," said Shinde.

Expressing his concern for his daughter, he added, "She remains in a coma, and we are helpless at this moment. We only pray for her recovery."

Neelam’s uncle, Yogesh Kadam, confirmed that the accident occurred on February 14, but the family was informed only on February 16. He mentioned that they had spoken with doctors on Thursday evening, who assured them that her condition was stable. The family was in the process of booking their flights and would depart for the US as soon as possible.

Kadam also stated that US authorities had not yet requested any payment for medical expenses. Additionally, Neelam’s university was actively assisting to ensure she received proper treatment.

"Her roommates informed us that local newspapers reported the arrest of the Nigerian national whose car hit her," Kadam added.

The incident has sparked concern among the Indian student community in the US, with many rallying support for Neelam’s recovery.
