Lucknow, Feb 26 – A murder accused carrying a bounty of ₹1 lakh was shot dead in a police encounter in the Mundali area of Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district early on Wednesday, officials confirmed.

According to Additional Director General (ADG) of the Uttar Pradesh Police Special Task Force (STF), Amitabh Yash, the accused, identified as Jitendra alias Jeetu from Haryana’s Jhajjar district, sustained serious injuries during the encounter. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.

Jitendra was wanted in connection with a 2023 contract killing in Ghaziabad's Teela Morh area. The police had issued a cash reward for his capture due to his criminal record.

Previously, Jitendra had been sentenced to life imprisonment for a double murder in Jhajjar in 2016. He was granted parole in 2023 but failed to return, going into hiding instead. Investigations revealed that he had developed ties with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang while in prison and continued working with its members after absconding.

Authorities confirmed that the encounter was part of an intensified crackdown on fugitives involved in organized crime across Uttar Pradesh.
