Lucknow, April 4 — Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has hailed the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 as a landmark step towards resolving long-standing issues related to waqf properties, particularly illegal encroachments and systemic corruption.Taking to social media platform X, Adityanath congratulated citizens and commended the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, under whom the bill was introduced and passed.
He also extended his gratitude to both Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, stating that the legislation would bolster the nation’s sovereignty while serving the interests of the people.“This bill will prove effective in addressing problems related to the management of waqf properties and in freeing them from illegal occupation and corruption,” he wrote.
Keshav Maurya Calls It a Historic Reform
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya echoed Adityanath’s sentiments, describing the bill as a historic decision and a major reform led by Modi’s government. He emphasised that the primary beneficiaries of the amendment would be poor Muslim families.Maurya compared the bill to other landmark decisions of the Modi government, including the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, the construction of the Ram Temple, and the abolition of triple talaq. According to him, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will play a crucial role in ending corruption and ensuring justice for the underprivileged.
He further stated that the amendment aligns with the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, marking a significant stride toward making India an economic powerhouse.
Taking aim at critics of the bill, Maurya added that those opposing the legislation now would eventually acknowledge its merits and might even apologise for their resistance.
Contentious Bill Clears Parliament After Intense Debate
Parliament cleared the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 early Friday, following a marathon 13-hour debate in the Rajya Sabha, where it was passed with 128 votes in favour and 95 against. The Lok Sabha had approved it earlier on Thursday, with 288 members supporting the bill and 232 voting against it.The bill faced strong opposition from several parties, who labelled it “anti-Muslim” and “unconstitutional.” In response, the government maintained that the bill represents a historic reform aimed at benefitting the minority community by ensuring better management and transparency of waqf properties.
In addition to the amendment, Parliament also passed the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2025, with both Houses giving their assent.
The twin legislations mark a significant shift in the governance and oversight of waqf assets, with the government positioning them as pivotal to the fight against illegal occupation and corruption, and the empowerment of the poor.
