Kolkata, Feb 2 (PTI) – West Bengal embraced the vibrant festivities of Saraswati Puja on Sunday, with devotees across the state paying homage to the Goddess of Wisdom. This year, the celebrations have been extended over two days, as the auspicious Panchami 'tithi' will continue until Monday morning.

Marking the arrival of Basanta Panchami, schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions came alive with devotion and joy. The festival was also observed in community clubs, residential societies, and Hindu households, with elaborate rituals and offerings.

Students, dressed in traditional sarees and kurtas, thronged their campuses, adding to the cheerful atmosphere. The day was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the much-awaited feast of ‘khichudi’—a dish offered to the goddess and relished by devotees.

However, the celebrations in South Kolkata’s Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College witnessed a standoff between two student groups over organizing the puja on campus. Education Minister Bratya Basu, accompanied by local TMC MP Mala Roy, intervened to resolve the dispute. Under a High Court directive, one faction conducted the puja on campus under police supervision, while the other held their celebration outside on the road.

Much like Durga Puja, this year’s Saraswati Puja saw extravagant theme-based pandals erected by students in several locations. At Batanagar in South 24 Parganas, the Newland Ground Saraswati Puja Committee captured attention by crafting a colossal 100-ft-tall idol. Meanwhile, Tala Prottoy, famed for its Durga Puja designs, showcased a uniquely structured pandal adorned with geometric patterns.

With grand decorations, cultural fervor, and strong community participation, Saraswati Puja 2025 reaffirmed its significance as one of Bengal’s most cherished festivals.
