Kolkata, May 11 – In the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting with district magistrates and superintendents of police, instructing them to remain on high alert and closely monitor any developments that may affect law and order in the state.
Law Enforcement on High Alert
The meeting at the state secretariat emphasized the importance of maintaining strict vigilance, particularly in districts sharing international or interstate borders. Chief Secretary Pant underlined the need for seamless coordination between district administrations, police departments, civil defence units, and other relevant bodies to respond to any emerging situation swiftly."The DMs, SPs, and senior police officers have been asked to remain alert so that an evolving situation can be addressed," Pant said following the meeting.
Emergency Food Stock for Three Months
Alongside security directives, the state government has initiated precautionary measures to ensure food security. Officials were instructed to stockpile essential food grains for the next three months — June, July, and August — with allocations to be dispatched in three phases. This move aims to prevent supply disruptions in an extended emergency."Food grains for June, July, and August will be sent to the districts as ration allocation in three phases," said a senior official who attended the meeting.
Health Infrastructure Readiness
Parallel to the administrative briefing, West Bengal Health Secretary NS Nigam consulted with district health officials to assess preparedness for potential emergencies. The focus remained on ensuring that the medical infrastructure and personnel are ready to respond effectively if the geopolitical situation deteriorates.Tensions at the Border
The state’s heightened alert follows the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, which came after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile exchanges. While both countries agreed to halt all military actions on land, sea, and air, India later accused Pakistan of violating the truce, adding to regional uncertainty. With the current backdrop of military strain, West Bengal’s government is bolstering its internal security and essential services to remain prepared for any contingency.
