New Delhi, April 1, 2025 — WhatsApp announced on Tuesday that it banned more than 9.7 million accounts in Indiain February 2025, citing violations of its Terms of Service. Notably, over 1.4 million accounts were proactively banned by the platform before receiving any user complaints.
The disclosure was part of the Meta-owned messaging app’s monthly user safety report, published in compliance with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Proactive Enforcement to Curb Abuse
According to the report, WhatsApp has ramped up efforts to prevent abuse on its platform by leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI), data science tools, and human expertise. These measures allow the company to detect and act on suspicious behavior even before it is reported by users."In February 2025, WhatsApp banned over 9.7 million accounts in India for violating its Terms of Service," the company said in a statement.
