New Delhi, February 26: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has vowed to continue its protest against the alleged removal of Bhimrao Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh’s portraits from the Delhi chief minister's office following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) assumption of power in the state.
In a joint press conference, AAP MLA Sanjiv Jha and party colleague Kuldeep Kumar accused the BJP of suppressing their voices in the Delhi Assembly. Kumar claimed that while BJP legislators chanted "Modi-Modi" in the House, AAP MLAs were suspended merely for raising the "Jai Bheem" slogan.
Jha further asserted that AAP would not tolerate the alleged removal of the portraits and would continue to demand their reinstatement. He emphasized that under AAP's governance, Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh’s portraits were prominently displayed in the chief minister’s office.
The controversy escalated on Tuesday when Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta suspended 21 AAP MLAs, including Leader of Opposition Atishi, for three days. The suspension followed disruptions during Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena's inaugural address, where AAP legislators protested the alleged removal of Ambedkar’s portrait and accused the BJP of disrespecting the Dalit icon.
In response, the BJP refuted AAP’s claims, dismissing them as "rumors." The party stated that the chief minister’s office continues to display the portraits of Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh, along with those of Mahatma Gandhi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The political row has intensified in the capital, with AAP determined to press forward with its agitation, while the BJP insists that no changes were made to the display of portraits in the chief minister’s office.
